Drug Dealers and punks selling in small town USA
75Newman California
Small Town USA
Here I am living in a small town in the Central Valley of California. Situated in Stanislaus County and in the heart of the countries most productive farm land. This part of the country is inhabited by farmers, ranchers, farm workers and their families.
Or should I say, used to be inhabited by these folks. Now days this area is inhabited by the aforementioned people as well as the transplanted bay area residents and all the hoopla and hype they brought with them.
The population here has grown 71% through the 90s (Newman, Ca. Profile). Now, as I looked through these web pages researching the population, crime and various data about Newman I found a completely biased set of data on almost all the sites. They are based on real estate companies trying to sell properties in this area and showed the data in the light they needed.
As you can see in the picture here, Newman is dead quiet this Monday evening at about 7:30 PM PDT. This is the 6th of the month and within the days that all the locals get their welfare checks, food stamps and Social Security Checks.
Balloon Launch
Parks and Balloons
In 1998 I purchased my first home here in Newman, Ca. It was on the east side of town in a new development that was only about 1/3 completed. At the time the town had two stop lights and a very small population. I move here from Santa Cruz, Ca. because I could not afford a house there at the then inflated housing prices.
I met the town hardware owner and bought $1000.00 worth of stuff for my new home. When I asked to have the stuff delivered because I did not have a truck, I was handed the keys to his personal pickup and told "Go on and take your things home and just return the truck later".
I soon met a local Hot Air Balloon Company owner at the town's Fall Festival and got a ride in a Balloon. I was already a Private pilot so I joined his school as a student and got my Commercial Lighter than air Hot Air Balloon Rating. I flew in the Newman Fall festival for several years after that giving rides and sharing the sport of Ballooning with the town.
What a difference from the current situation here in Newman. Now we have a huge population with a very high percentage of "Imported" bay area residents and immigrants that have no feeling for the town or any remorse at it's destruction.

Drug Deals and Crime: How Things Have Changed
Tonight I went out for a walk with my spouse and our three dogs. The main street was deserted and as we walked south we noticed not one soul out on the street at about 7:30 PM. This is very unusual for this town and any town I have ever been in. Part of this is because it is the 6th of the month and many of the towns residents just got their welfare/Cash Aid/Food Stamps and are at home eating.
But an even bigger part of this is that just around the corner, lies the real reason Newman is so deserted. The local drug dealers and their customers are all hanging out on the street corners and in driveways either getting stoned or buying and selling their garbage.
Drug Deals in Real Time
The Park
The reason Newman is deserted tonight is that as always, the punks and drug dealers are out walking the dark corners, the parks and the alleys selling and buying their poison. The reason Newman is deserted is these punks have gun fights in the park and have intimidated the local "Police" to the point of doing nothing.
Seriously, the local constables are so afraid of these jokers that they sit at home watching TV "On Call" as the scum rule the town. Recently, I saw one of the local businesses that was broken into (and even took pictures of the door smashed in) and when I called 911 and they notified the local police, the answer was "We are too busy and do not have the manpower to handle this call".
What Can We Do
I guess the point I am making is, we as a society, each and every one of us needs to stand up, make a statement and be a part of the solution. If each one of us writes letters to our city hall, congress, representatives, governor etc we can make a difference.
What would happen if each of you reading this went out in your town or city, took pictures, wrote letters and hollered at the top of your lungs "I am not taking this anymore".
Please, Take this to heart, tell everyone you know, write hubs, write letters, take pictures and TOGETHER WE CAN TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK!.
Get angry, get mad or sad or whatever it takes you to TAKE ACTION!
Action can be totally passive and peaceful, I am not advocating violence....Just Action.

I am sorry to hear about what is happening in your community. If the "Zero Tolerance" policy was so effective in New York why isn't applied in the rest of your country?
Thank you for sharing and hopefully your hub will get more people to take action as you suggest.
Bravo on an excellent hub, one which points out a growing problem. We see it all too often here in Washington State and the city I live in, Olympia, has a serious problem that the city officials are slow to react to. Great job on this one and best of luck.
I also live in a small town. We are right off an interstate hiway between two major cities in this area and drugs have been a problem here also. I have to say that our city police and county sherriff's office due a good job here and are always busy. We do have to take action to help combat this problem. You do have to be careful as to how you become involved, but you can't just sit back and ignore it either. I enjoyed this hub and will be sharing this. Voted up and interesting!
Curiad...
I've lived in large towns and small towns and a few in between and the scourge you speak of is fairly well entrenched in all of them. The way your local police force is acting reminds me of the stories I am hearing in the news about Mexico where entire police forces are quitting (en mass) due to the pressure of intimidation...truly sad.
America has changed and the 'heartland' is now dedicated to bathtub meth production in isolated hamlets. I shall certainly share this important message!
Thanks,
Thomas
This problem runs up and down the I-5 corridor; one city will do a clean sweep and they move their business to another city along the freeway system. It is an endless problem along a 1,500 mile highway and there are not enough law enforcement types to deal with it. It takes community awareness and action groups, city councils, etc. to drive them out of a town. Again, great job on this hub!
That is really sad.

I hate to hear this. This type of ordeal can cause bias ism anywhere. I don't know if this would help you any but for the most part drug dealers never pay attention to people who are not involved in the selling or using of drugs. It's dangerous to get involved in the process of serving justice and their biggest fear aside of the law is people in their community who want to tell on them. If you want to help your community then find someone who is a drug abuser and help them get off drugs, for when they don 't do drugs then the dealers won't have any customers and will move on to the next town or city.
